A Face Roller’s Benefits
What can a roller do for your skin?
Most likely, you’ve seen a face roll on social media.
This little gadget is made most often from rose quartz or jade. There are two types of roller balls. Some look like small rolling pins with rollers at both ends.
These products are also said to have major skin benefits.
Why is it that people use a face roller to massage their faces? Is this a trend that will continue?
A face roller can be a great way to massage your skin. You can even release tension and stress with a face roller, similar to a body massage.
Does face rolling work?
Some benefits could be real. These are the facts so far. However, there is much more we don’t yet know.
- Increases blood circulation to your face. A face roller can increase blood flow, which could help your skin appear brighter.
- Reduces puffiness. Rolling can also reduce puffiness (like under-eye bags). Lymphatic drainage may be stimulated by rolling. There have been some studies that show this massage can reduce swelling. More research is needed to determine if facial rollers can reduce puffiness.
- A facial massage can improve mood. An older 2008 research showed that facial massage might reduce anxiety.
- Facial massage can improve the appearance of your skin. The facial massage was shown to have anti-aging benefits in a 2017 study. This is especially true when it’s combined with anti-aging creams. It was not done with facial rolling machines.
- Soothes and cools the skin. Use a natural cold stone, like jade or in the fridge to keep it chilled. Although the benefits are yet to be discovered, some people might enjoy how it feels.
- Distributes skin-care products. Rollers can be used with oil or moisturizer to make the tool glide smoothly across your skin. Although this may help to penetrate the skin more deeply, there is no scientific evidence.
How to use a facial roller
These steps are for facial roller use:
- Use a serum, moisturizer or a face oil that is slippery enough. You may get wrinkles if you don’t have enough lubrication.
- Begin at your neck, and then roll upward. Roll up and not back and forth for best results.
- Use gentle pressure to roll your jawline towards your ear on each side. Continue this motion from your jawline to your cheekbone.
- Move from your forehead upwards towards your hairline. This is the same gentle pulling you would use to pull your skin taut and wrinkle-free with your hands.
- If you are suffering from a headache, it may be helpful to roll your eyebrows horizontally.
A facial massage or face exercise can be done without a roller. An at-home facial can be done without the need for any tools.
How often should you use your face roller?
You can use face rollers every day. Some studies show you will see better results if the roller is used long-term.
What length of time do you want to roll?
Even if you have only a few minutes to spare, you might still be able to get some of the benefits of de-stressing or de-puffing.
A 2018 study found that a facial massage roller can increase blood flow to the cheeks by increasing blood flow for as little as 5 minutes. The roller should only be used for 10 minutes. If the roller starts to hurt, stop using it. Being gentle is the key to everything that has to do with your skin.
The Myths About Facial Roller Massage
Although there are many claims about facial rollers being effective, evidence is not available to support these claims.
Let’s talk about some myths surrounding facial rollers.
- A roller can help slim down your face. False. Nutrition and exercise are the only ways to lose weight truly. The facial roller’s de-puffing capabilities may temporarily make your face appear slimmer.
- A facial roll can treat a condition. False. Although there are claims that crystals and other materials may help with disease, there isn’t enough evidence to support this claim.
- False. Facial rollers may have lasting effects. Although you might notice some improvements in your skin’s appearance, these changes are unlikely to last. You will see the most benefits if you continue to use your skin regularly.
