Pigmentation

How to naturally treat skin hyperpigmentation

Pigmentation is the colour of the skin. Skin pigmentation disorders can cause skin colour changes. The pigment responsible for your skin’s colour is melanin, produced by skin cells.

Hyperpigmentation causes your skin to turn dark. It can cause the skin to become darker or affect your whole body. Age spots, also known as liver spots, are a common form of hyperpigmentation.

Although hyperpigmentation is generally harmless, it can sometimes be caused due to an underlying medical condition. Your skin may also become darker due to certain medications. This is more of a cosmetic problem for most people.

Home treatment for Pigmentation

Hyperpigmentation can be treated at home in many ways. Although some of the remedies are purely anecdotal, research has shown that their main ingredients can be used to treat hyperpigmentation.

Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has acetic Acid. Research suggests that this Acid may lighten Pigmentation.

This remedy can be used:

  1. In a container, combine equal amounts of apple cider vinegar with water.
  2. Apply the cream to the dark areas and let it sit for two to three minutes.
  3. Rinse with lukewarm running water.
  4. You can do this daily until you get the results that you want.

Aloe vera

Aloe Vera is a natural depigmenting agent that has been proven to lighten the skin and act effectively as a non-toxic treatment for hyperpigmentation, according to a 2012 study.

To use:

  1. Before bed, apply pure aloe vera gel on pigmented areas.
  2. The next morning, rinse with warm water.
  3. Keep going until you notice a change in your skin colour.

Red onion

Red onions ( Allium Cepa ) extract can be found in some commercially-available skin- and scar-lightening products. The research found that dried red onion skin can lighten skin. Use the creams for hyperpigmentation containing Allium Cepa as directed.

Green tea extract

Research suggests that green Tea Extract can cause skin pigmentation. Green tea extract can be purchased and used as directed. Although some websites claim that green tea bags can be applied to dark spots to lighten them, there is not enough evidence to support this claim.

These are the steps to try if you want to give it a shot.

  1. Boil a green tea bag for 3 to 5 minutes.
  2. Let the teabag out of the hot water.
  3. Place the teabag on your dark patches.
  4. Keep going until you see results.

Black tea water

An animal study in 2011 showed that black Tea water lightened dark spots in Guinea Pigs. The black tea water was used twice daily for six days for four weeks.

You can make your hyperpigmentation treatment at-home

  1. To a cup of boiling distilled water, add a tablespoon of freshly brewed black tea leaves.
  2. Leave the leaves steep for at least two hours, then strain them to get rid of them.
  3. Apply the tea water to a cotton ball and soak it twice daily.
  4. You can do this every day for six consecutive days or over four weeks.

Licorice extract

Licorice extract has active ingredients that have been proven to reduce hyperpigmentation from sun exposure and melasma. Over-the-counter creams containing Licorice Extract are also available. Follow the instructions on the package.

Milk

All types of milk, including buttermilk and sour, have been shown to lighten skin colour. Lactic Acid is responsible for this effect.

You can use any one of these products to treat Pigmentation

  • Place a cotton ball in the milk.
  • Rub it over darkened skin patches twice a day.
  • Keep going until you start to see results.
